About Miramichi, NB

Miramichi City occupies the point on New Brunswick’s eastern coast where Miramichi Bay and the Miramichi River meet, near Kouchibouguac National Park. The city is close to the Northumberland Strait, which feeds out into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and it’s on the southern end of Bathurst. Miramichi offers picturesque waterfront parks, historic sites, and cultural experiences. With a whole range of appealing lifestyle choices in Canada’s youngest provincial capital city, you’re sure to find your new dream home.

Miramichi’s real estate market is strong with homes in the region selling quickly. If you’re looking for a new home in Miramichi, there are many types available. There is a good selection of condos, as well as single family homes. Prices for condos range from around $150K to about $300K, while houses start at around $100K to $200K.

When moving to Miramichi, you’ll find that the community is outgoing and welcoming. It’s hard not to be when you live in a city as naturally beautiful as this one! Miramichi is a fantastic choice for anyone who wants to live somewhere new and experience all the incredible things the land has to offer. If you want to relax, there are places in the city with walkways and bike paths that offer impressive views of rural surroundings. In the summer, it’s easy to grab a beach chair and make your way to relaxing beaches for some sunbathing or a stroll on the pier. For those who love the water, there are plenty of places in Miramichi’s surrounding waters to go swimming, boating, and fishing. Aside from the Miramichi River, some of the most popular places to spend the day by the water are French Fort Cove and Ritchie Wharf. If you’d rather explore the centre of the city, St. Michael’s Basilica is one of the most beautiful places to start. Continue walking around the area, see some historic Victorian-era buildings, and learn how it all came to be at the Miramichi Natural History Museum

The economy in Miramichi is heavily dependent on the mining, fishing, and forestry sectors. This comes as no surprise, considering the area provides an abundance of water and natural forests. The largest employer in the city is in the service sector. J.D. Irving, University of New Brunswick, and Salesforce are just a few of the major employers in Miramichi. If you have kids, Miramichi provides a few different primary and high schools for you to choose from. The Anglophone North School District offers both private and public education opportunities for your children, and if they would like to further their education, University of New Brunswick has a campus right in the city!

Miramichi Transportation

The best way to get around Miramichi, by far, is by car. As a part of the Greater Miramichi Metropolitan area, nearby highways are easily accessible. Parking is available just about anywhere, whether you’re downtown or on the outskirts of the city. You may be able to walk to and from a few places closer to the city centre, but it’s not recommended to depend on walking or biking for daily activities in Miramichi. If you don’t have your own car, Miramichi Transit provides a flexible bus schedule you can refer to if you need to go somewhere. With multiple lines to choose from, as well as a Saturday Late Night bus service, you should have no trouble making your way around Miramichi. Need to fly out of the province or even the country? The Miramichi Airport is closest, but doesn’t provide many flight options. Luckily, Miramichi is within a 90-minute drive of two international airports: Fredericton International and Greater Moncton International

Things To Do in Miramichi, NB

Having a difficult time figuring out which park to check out first or what downtown activities to try in Miramichi? We are here to help! While there are several amazing things to do in the city, here are the top 10 attractions to see when you move to Miramichi.

  1. French Fort Cove
    • If you’re looking for a place to take the family on a day trip, pack up your beach chairs and head over to French Fort Cove at the city’s east side. With impressive views of the Miramichi River and many other natural forest-like areas, this park is great for biking or hiking. The waterfront itself is also an incredible place to take pictures, especially in the summer when families and friends gather for a picnic in the sun.
  2. Ritchie Wharf
    • For those who’d rather stay near the city, Ritchie Wharf is the perfect place to bring a fishing pole and relax. Located on Miramichi Bay in the center of Miramichi, you’ll be able to watch boats come in and out as you try your luck at fishing! Your experience at the Wharf is definitely dependent on the season, but in the summer months there is everything from local booths to live entertainment.
  3. Miramichi River
    • The Miramichi River is located right in the centre of downtown Miramichi, connecting the lakes with the ocean. There are many walking trails that follow along the river as it weaves through the city. Some of these trails allow you to walk in and out of the river itself, which can be fun depending on the season!
  4. St. Michael’s Basilica
    • If you’d like to visit a historic church in Miramichi, St. Michael’s Basilica is the way to go! Built in 1843, this wooden building was originally constructed for the Anglican community before being converted into an active Catholic Church. The altar is one of the most beautiful pieces in the Basilica, playing host to several high-quality, intricate carvings.
  5. Beaubears Island Interpretive Centre
    • If you’d like to learn more about Miramichi’s First Nations history, the Beaubears Island Interpretive Centre is the place to go. The centre tells a story of the Mi’kmaq Nation and their history with this area, as well as what it is like today within Miramichi.
  6. Wilson’s Point
    • Another great place to spend your time outside is Wilson’s Point, located on Miramichi Bay. With several walking trails and a scenic outlook of the city skyline, this park has its ups and down depending on the season. In autumn, fall foliage is at its peak! If you’re lucky, you may even spot some wildlife near the water’s edge.
  7. Middle Island Irish Historical Park
    • If you’re looking to learn more about Miramichi’s Irish heritage, there is no better place to visit than the Middle Island Irish Historical Park. The park offers historical information on Ireland before and after its colonization by England. You can also see a view of the ocean from the top of Mersey Point Lighthouse.
  8. MacDonald Farm Provincial Heritage Place
    • If you’re interested in learning about New Brunswick’s history, especially with agricultural practices, MacDonald Farm Provincial Heritage Place is the best place to go. The area hosts several stone houses and barns that are worth visiting and learning more about. You can also experience a taste of what it was like to work on a farm as part of the education program provided by the park!
  9. Miramichi Natural History Museum
    • If you’re looking for a way to spend some time indoors, stop by the Miramichi Natural History Museum! The museum covers all sorts of topics related to natural history, from moving fossils and butterflies to dioramas. There is even a special section that focuses on New Brunswick’s dinosaur discoveries!
  10. Historic Beaverbrook House
    • One of the most beautiful attractions in Miramichi is the Historic Beaverbrook House, located on a small island in Miramichi Bay. The house itself was originally built by financier and political activist Lord Beaverbrook for his family home. Although the house has been turned into a museum, it still holds true to its original design; you can even see the original furnishings and decorations! The view of Miramichi from here is nothing short of amazing.

Miramichi Day Trips

When you move to Miramichi, you’re not only giving yourself access to everything the city has to offer, but you’re also opening yourself up to some beautiful New Brunswick spots! Here are a few of our favourite day trips to take out of Miramichi, NB:

    • If you’re looking for a nature escape when visiting Miramichi, there is no better way to go than Kouchibouguac National Park. This park offers camping opportunities among the coastal forest and red sand dunes of Northumberland County. In addition to this, you can climb up into the forest canopy on one of their aerial adventure trails! If you’re lucky, you may even spot some wildlife near the coast. This park is only a 30-minute drive from Miramichi, so it’s the perfect day trip.
  2. The Irving Eco-Centre
    • Another great way to experience New Brunswick’s natural beauty is by visiting The Irving Eco-Centre. Only about an hour from Miramichi, this is where you can spend time in the forest learning more about ecotourism as well as nature itself! Along with this, there are a few trails leading around and throughout the forest that offer unique opportunities for exploration.

The village, only an hour and a half away, offers guided tours as well as access to craft demonstrations and special presentations by artisans. You’re sure to learn more about New Brunswick’s culture here, making it an experience not to forget!
  4. New Brunswick Aquarium and Marine Centre
