About Moncton, NB

Moncton is one of the largest cities in New Brunswick and is located at the end of the Petitcodiac River where it meets the Bay of Fundy. As a city with two official languages – English and French – Moncton is a world centre for celebrating Acadian heritage and culture. With a population of over 85,000, the historical city continues to flourish and has a perfect balance of a tourist city hub and a nature-lovers paradise.

Moncton is known as one of the most livable cities in Canada because it has reasonable housing costs and neighbourhoods with proximity to parks, schools, and retail stores. Moncton’s homes for sale primarily include single-family detached homes and small apartment buildings. One-third of the homes in Moncton are rented out, but owner-occupied units make up the other two-thirds. Roughly 30% of the buildings were constructed post-2000, with the rest having been built in the 1960s. You’ll find that a majority of homes in the area have an average cost of around 198,000.

Moncton is one of New Brunswick’s main shopping destinations. At the Mapleton Plaza and Wheeler Park Power Centre in north-end Moncton, you’ll find a wide range of retailers as well as grocery and restaurant options. The CF Champlain mall in neighbouring Dieppe caters to your every need with more than 140 shops on site. Moncton’s downtown area features many locally-owned stores that carry specialty items. On Saturday mornings, you can visit the farmers’ market for a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables grown locally. If you’re looking for a less crowded and more relaxing day, head to Centennial Park or Mapleton Park, both which offer hiking trails, recreational activities, and pet-play areas. For sports fanatics, Moncton offers a variety of complexes and fields that make for excellent playing space.

Moncton’s economy is mainly based on the service sector, but sectors such as trade, transportation and warehousing are also instrumental to Moncton’s economy. Some well-known companies that provide job opportunities for residents in Moncton include New Brunswick Power and Medavie Blue Cross.

As Canada’s only officially bilingual province, Moncton offers education in both English and French. Anglophone East School District offers both English and French immersion curriculums, while the Francophone South School District instructs students in French only.

Moncton Transportation

Moncton is accessible by both air and ground travel. The Greater Moncton International Airport (YQM) offers direct flights to major Canadian cities such as Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver. You can also access the airport and other New Brunswick cities through Amtrak’s passenger train service. Moncton has multiple taxi services that operate 7 days a week. When it comes to ground transportation, you’ll find an abundance of rental car agencies in the area as well as Try Transit bus service with multiple stops across Moncton’s downtown area. Otherwise, with Moncton covering so much ground, it’s best to have your own vehicle to get around.

Things To Do in Moncton, NB

As one of New Brunswick’s largest cities by population and land area, you’ll never run out of things to do when you live in Moncton. From galleries to parks to festivals, here are some of the top things to do in Moncton, NB.

  1. Tidal Bore
    • Moncton’s tidal bore is one of the most fascinating events in Moncton. Every year, between May 15 and June 20, the water levels grow significantly higher as a result of spring tides and flooding from snow melt. The tides will peak at roughly eight feet on the Richibucto River estuary while also creating rushing waves that extend upwards of 300 meters into the ocean.
  2. Magnetic Hill Zoo
    • Magnetic Hill Zoo is one of New Brunswick’s most popular attractions and has been operating since 1961. The zoo welcomes around 25,000 visitors annually and features more than 300 animals representing 80 species. You’ll find a host of activities for both adults and children including animal presentations, pony rides, pedal carts, as well as picnic space for larger gatherings.
  3. Centennial Park
    • Moncton’s Centennial Park is often used for outdoor events and activities because of its size. The park features the city’s well-known tidal bore that draws in tourists from across the province as well as numerous trails, a playground, and an off-leash dog area. The park also offers beach access to Lake Moncton where you can swim, fish, or go paddling.
  4. RCMP Memorial
    • In memory of Moncton’s fallen RCMP officers, a memorial was erected in Centennial Park in 2005. More than sixteen members of the RCMP have been killed on duty since the inception of the force in New Brunswick. The memorial has a light that shines at night and represents ongoing support from all Canadians for those who protect them.
  5. Magic Mountain Water Park
    • Magic Mountain offers a perfect day for families of all ages. The water park has two main pools: the first is with a depth of 3 metres, while the second pool features a 6-metre deep end. There’s also an additional smaller pool available for younger swimmers accompanied by parents or guardians. Magic Mountain features slides, hot tubs, and water cannons for hours of fun. New this year: there’s a ropes course available for kids to test their bravery.
  6. Magnetic Hill Park
    • Magnetic Hill Park is another magnet for tourists in Moncton. Its main attraction is the hill that’s reputed to have magnetic properties, thus the name, though it’s been proven that there are no such properties at work. It’s still a fun lookout point with beautiful views of the city and its river valley. You can also find a few picnic tables and playgrounds here.
  7. Irishtown Nature Park
    • Irishtown Nature Park is the only one of its kind in New Brunswick. It’s a 16-hectare protected wetland and includes walking paths, interpretive signage, as well as two observation towers. The park has extensive wetlands that attract hundreds of species of birds and offers breathtaking views from atop its trails and lookouts.
  8. Magnetic Hill Winery
    • The winery has been open since 1975 and offers a number of unique wines, including island ice wine. Take your pick from the many varieties available in order to taste New Brunswick’s finest wines. The vineyard is located on an old potato farm and provides ample space for outdoor concerts and events.
  9. Casino New Brunswick
    • Casino New Brunswick features all your favourite slot, poker, and table games. There are also restaurants open daily as well as an Onyx Lobby Bar & Lounge where you can unwind after a long day in Moncton.
  10. Resurgo Place
    • Resurgo Place commemorates those New Brunswick men and women who lost their lives during the two World Wars, as well as the Korean War. It’s often used for public events including concerts, seminars, and is home to several non-profit organizations. Resurgo Place also features a small museum with artifacts from Moncton’s history.

Moncton Day Trips

Once you’ve gotten your fill of Moncton itself, you’ll want to see what else New Brunswick has to offer. Moncton is an excellent launching point for several day trips you can take with family or friends. Here are a couple options to get you started:

  1. Cape Jourimain Nature Centre
    • Cape Jourimain offers stunning views of the Bay of Fundy. The nature centre is open year-round and features a boardwalk that extends about 400 meters into the bay. From this vantage point you can see all kinds of wildlife, including seals and bald eagles. In addition to outdoor exploration opportunities, there’s an aquarium onsite, an interpretive centre, and a gift shop. Just an hour outside of Moncton, this is an educational and easy day trip for the whole family.
  2. Waterfowl Park and Trail
    • This park is a must-see in New Brunswick and is located just off the Fundy trail. It offers breathtaking views of the Bay of Fundy, as well as trails for biking, hiking, ATVs, and more. There are also interpretive signs along the trails that point out various plant and animal species native to the area. The park is just 30 minutes from home, meaning you can stay for a couple hours or the whole day!
  3. Parlee Beach
    • Parlee Beach is located on New Brunswick’s southern coast and boasts some of the finest white sand beaches in Canada. Less than 30 minutes from town, the beach is named after Mary Parlee, a local woman who saved many lives during an 1886 shipwreck off of her beachfront property. Today she’s recognized as a hero for saving so many lives and the beach is named after her.
  4. Fundy Trail Parkway
    • New Brunswick’s Fundy Trail Parkway stretches from Moncton to Saint John and takes you through some of the province’s most beautiful scenery. The route offers a number of entertaining activities, including kayaking, ziplining at Lake Temiscouata, golfing, beach combing, and fishing. The Fundy Trail Parkway is a great way to experience the natural beauty of New Brunswick and reconnect with nature while touring the province’s two largest cities.
