Located on the Avalon Peninsula, Mount Pearl is just a 15-minute drive from downtown St. John’s. Mount Pearl has a population of around 12,000 people. Mount Pearl dates back to 1829, when Commander James Pearl and his wife, Lady Anne Pearl, arrived in Newfoundland with a Crown grant of one thousand acres of land, a reward for Commander Pearl’s 27 years of distinguished service in the Royal Navy. The first settlers arrived at the foot of what is now called Berry’s Hill. The houses were situated by a slope down towards the water, and they are still there today with their owners’ names carved into them from when they were built. The streets were laid out based on which families lived closest to the water – today, these are still called “the river lots.”

About 45% of homes in Mount Pearl are single-family, and duplexes and townhouses make up most of the remainder. 40% of the homes were built between 1960 and 1990. Homes for sale are mostly three or more bedroom homes. Home prices vary in Mount Pearl, depending on the size of the house and where it’s located. The Glacier Arena located in St. David’s park is an excellent option whether you are looking to spend time indoors or outdoors. Mount Pearl also has some great golf courses for the avid golfer. The Mount Pearl Golf Club offers an 18-hole, par 72 course with a clubhouse and pro shop on site. GForce Funderdome and GolfShotz Indoor Golf Centre are more options for a fun day out with the family.

If you’re looking to take in some history or culture then a trip up north would not be complete without visiting L’Anse Aux Meadows National Historic Site, the site of a Viking settlement discovered in 1960. More history lies in Ferryland Heritage Park and the Terra Nova Historical Site. You can also head to Cape Spear for one of the best views over Newfoundland and see where Cabot first landed or you could find yourself at Gros Morne National Park, one of the most famous natural wonders of Canada.

Located on Newfoundland’s east coast, the park overlooks Trinity Bay and includes Fort Elizabeth – an authentic 17th century English fort built in 1697 to protect the colony of Ferryland from attack by pirates or other enemies.
    • The Visitor Centre features interactive exhibits about the history of Ferryland and its role in Newfoundland’s early colonial development, an art gallery with local artists, a library and gift shop. A ferry service operates between the park to Witless Bay Ecological Reserve (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) from late June through September each year.

    • Tourists come from around the world to visit Terra Nova National Park in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland. The park is home to a fort that was built by English settlers in 1697 and it’s situated on Trinity Bay with views over the ocean. Visitors can go inside Fort Elizabeth which includes an exhibit about what life might have been like for early colonists.
