More About Weston Real Estate

What originally started as a hamlet in the 1790s, called The Humber, is now the neighbourhood you see today. This area was renamed Weston in 1828 after the Weston-super-Mare estate in Somerset, England. The estate was owned by ‘the Wadsworth brothers’ family, the brothers had moved to this part of Toronto and bought a general store.  Weston was originally settled on both sides of the Humber River, but a tragic flood destroyed the settlement on the west bank in 1850. Weston began to prosper again in 1856 when the railroad was built through the area.

The neighbourhood is still very much centred along the railroad today, and though it was eventually considered an independent town from 1915 to 1967, it was amalgamated in 1998 as part of the bigger city of Toronto. Today, Weston is bordered by the Humber River to the west/southwest, which runs parallel with Weston Road. On the east side is Jane Street, which intersects with both Church Street and Lawrence Ave, which run east to west.

Weston Amenities

Despite Weston being a relatively small neighbourhood, it packs a lot of punch as far as conveniences go. Here are some of the major amenities available in Weston:

Parks and Recreation

Believe it or not, Weston used to be Home of the Bicycle, born from its days as once being home to the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world. Though bicycles aren’t built here anymore, Weston has a pretty cool bike path that runs along the Humber River and south to the Martin Goodman Trail, on Toronto’s waterfront. There’s also the Weston Golf and Country Club located off of St. Phillips Road; it’s where Arnold Palmer won his first tournament as a professional!

Overlooking the Humber River is the Weston Lions Park, the largest park in the neighbourhood. Here you’ll find several tennis courts, a couple of baseball fields and swimming pools, a concessions area, and a playground. The Weston Lions Recreation Arena is here too, which offers rental of its venue as well minor league hockey games being hosted here too.

Shopping and Dining

Weston Road is the main thoroughfare in the neighbourhood and it’s where the residents go running, do errands, shop, and dine. Just south of Hwy 401, on Weston Road, is the Crossroads Centre. It’s where you’ll find several big-box chain stores. Between the centre and the other shops along Weston Road, residents don’t have to go far from home to get the necessities.

Healthcare

West Park Healthcare Centre is a hospital just south of Weston’s borders. The Humber River Hospital to the northeast of Weston also offers several services including an emergency room and a labour and delivery centre. If there’s another hospital you prefer and are willing to drive a few extra minutes, there are several other healthcare facilities within proximity to Weston.

Transportation

Though most people prefer to drive in Weston, with easy access to Hwy 400 and Hwy 401, there are also a couple of public transit services available. Residents can hop on a bus along Weston Road or Jane Street and connect to the Bloor-Danforth subway station. The bus stops on Lawrence Avenue too and will connect passengers to the Lawrence subway station. There’s a train service available too.
