Bedford Park-Nortown began as a crossroads stop for farmers on their way to the market in the city. It’s speculated the neighbourhood was named after the Bedford Park Hotel that opened in 1873, where Patisserie Sebastien is now located. Eventually, Bedford Park merged with Eglinton and Davisville to be incorporated as North Toronto.

Bedford Park-Nortown started as a modest hamlet. Middle-class housing development occurred from 1890 to 1940. Most homes built in Bedford Park-Nortown consisted of semi-detached and mid-sized detached homes. You’ll find many of these homes still standing today. It’s common to find they’ve been restored or renovated to be retrofitted with modern conveniences.

Bedford Park-Nortown Schools

There are two main languages spoken in Toronto, Ontario: English and French. Because of this, there are French and English-speaking schools available to Bedford Park residents.

The Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board operate schools in Bedford Park-Nortown. The schools serving in Bedford Park-Nortown are:

Both Conseil scholaire Viamonde and Conseil scholaire catholique MonAvenir provide French-speaking public schools for the people of Bedford Park-Nortown, though neither has a school in the neighbourhood.

Bedford Park-Nortown is a small community and relies on Toronto for most of its amenities. Bedford Park-Nortown still offers its residents a few conveniences close to home, such as parks, shopping, restaurants, and a medical centre.

Recreation

The footprint of Bedford Park-Nortown isn’t very big, but it still manages to have a decent park worth visiting.

The Woburn Avenue Playground is located at 75 Woburn Avenue and is covered in a canopy of grown trees. It’s the perfect place for playdates, picnics, or just to let children burn off some energy. The park even has a wading pool for kids to splash around in during the summer months.

Shopping and Dining

There aren’t a lot of shops, but there are a few small stores along Avenue Road, Lawrence Avenue, and Younge Street. Just outside of Bedford Park-Nortown is the Locke Branch of the Toronto Public Library. You can also find quick access to medical care at the Lawrence Park Medical Centre on Younge Street.

Public Transit

Toronto’s transit system reaches Bedford Park-Nortown. There are several bus stops along the edge of the neighbourhood as well as a transportation interchange at Avenue Road and Woburn Avenue.
