More About Centennial Scarborough

This family-centric neighbourhood hasn’t always been this way, with decades of history coming together to make Centennial Scarborough what it is today. Centennial Scarborough began as a small lakefront town called Port Union in the 19th century. As a part of the Township of Pickering, there originally were not many options for housing in the area. It wasn’t until after World War II that the neighbourhood developed as a suburban community where families could grow for years to come. Over the years, as residents have come through Centennial Scarborough, each of them have been a part of creating a community where you’ll find a friendly face at every corner. The mature trees, abundant parkland, and scenic waterfront have made Centennial Scarborough a prime place to plant roots.

A majority of the homes for sale in Centennial Scarborough (Port Union) are single-family detached houses. Outside of single-family homes, you’ll find a limited number of townhomes for sale in Centennial Scarborough. While both the single-family homes and townhomes can range between one and two storeys, there is no residential housing in the Centennial Scarborough area with over five storeys. Most homes feature architectural styles that showcase English, Spanish, and Swiss elements, and you’ll notice that many of the single-family homes in the area resemble cottages or ranch-style bungalows.

At the southern end of Centennial Scarborough, old school homes from Port Union’s original development still stand. If you are looking for a house with some undeniable historical charm, southern Centennial Scarborough is where you’ll want to search. Along the waterfront there are several newly constructed townhomes with gorgeous views of Lake Ontario. This new subdivision called Port Union Village offers a lakeside lifestyle within a close distance to all your necessary amenities.

Home prices in Centennial Scarborough can range anywhere from $1 million to $2 million, but the average price of a house in the area falls around $1.3 million.

Centennial Scarborough Schools

Centennial Scarborough is an excellent neighbourhood when it comes to education. One of the biggest reasons that Centennial is such a family-centered neighbourhood is that it has a wide array of schooling options for every age. The Toronto District School Board oversees most of the public schools, while the Toronto Catholic District School Board offers religious education and Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir offers education options with French immersion.

Here are some of the schools to choose from in the area:

  • Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute
  • St. Brendan Catholic Elementary School
  • Charlottetown Public School
  • Centennial Road Public School
  • School of École élémentaire catholique Sainte-Madeleine

Centennial Scarborough Amenities

While Centennial Scarborough once held only amenities that served those in the fishing or trade industries, the neighbourhood now has at least one of everything you might need. From parks to libraries to restaurants to grocery stores, Centennial has got you covered.

Recreation

The largest spot for recreation in Centennial Scarborough is the Port Union Recreation Centre. Located on Lawrence Avenue East, the Port Union Rec Centre offers residents a fitness centre, two multi-purpose activity rooms, a large banquet hall, and a senior centre. Whether you’re looking to host an event or just get in a workout, this is the place to go.

On the West Wing of the Port Union Rec Centre is the Public Library. With thousands of books, movies, and resources to choose from, the library is a great place to catch up on your favourite novel or do some research. They have children’s activities as well, so you can bring the whole family and enjoy some educational fun for the day.

Parks

Mature trees and greenspaces are major staples of Centennial Scarborough. With so many families in the area, there’s no question why there are plenty of parks to choose from.

One of Centennial’s most loved parks is Colonel Danforth Park on the western end of the neighbourhood. This deep ravine valley is heavily wooded and features ample space for picnics, walks, pick-up sports, and casual hangouts.

If you’re looking for a little more action, Adams Park is located just west of Port Union Road. Adams park features ball fields, baseball diamonds, a children’s playground, a wading pool, flower gardens, and several picnic tables. Whether you need to cool off in the middle of summer or take in the cool autumn breeze in the fall, Adams Park will be the best place.

Shopping and Dining

Centennial Scarborough has plenty of shopping areas, from grocery stores to retail to hair salons, you’ll find everything you need here. Centennial Plaza is one of the top spots for locals to fulfill their shopping needs. Located on the corner of Port Union Road and Lawrence Avenue, Centennial Plaza holds a deli and bakery, video store, hardware store, hair salon, pet store and animal clinic, coffee shop, several restaurants, professional offices, and a medical centre!

If you just need a few simple things and want to avoid the crowd at Centennial Plaza, you can head to the Lawson Road Plaza. This smaller shopping centre provides all your typical daily needs, with a grocery store, dry cleaners, banks, and a gas station.

Public Transit

While Centennial Scarborough doesn’t have it’s own Go Train Station, there are bus services that can get you there. Lawrence Avenue, Lawson Road, and Port Union Road all have bus services that connect you to the nearest train station. If you’re looking to head downtown, the Go Train provides a connecting route to Union Station and the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line. If you need to stay within the city, Centennial Scarborough is relatively walkable and bikeable depending on where you need to go.

If you have your own vehicle and prefer to drive, the 401 is just off of Port Union Road and will lead you to several other Toronto areas, including downtown’s financial and entertainment districts.
